Wemberley! Wemberley!

18th April 2011

Should both of the football association cup semi finals be held at the new Wembley stadium? Doesn’t it degrade the glamour of the cup to have the semis played there, taking the shine off the final? If the final is to be something special – a potentially once in a lifetime experience for a football fan, something they will never forget then surely you need to have just the final played there?

I was also thinking about the Manchester fans (though a cynic will say holding the Manchester ‘derby’ semi final at Wembley will have made it easier for United’s fans given they are all from London!) and how the two sets of supporters had to travel all the way from Manchester to London, whilst other events such as the London Marathon were taking place and the M1 motorway was closed between junctions one and four. Surely a semi final at Aston Villa’s Villa Park or better still Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough would have made more sense travel wise, not to mention cost wise? I filled up my car with petrol yesterday and a full tank cost nearly ninety squids! A return trip in an average family car from Manchester to London will have cost at least that just in fuel. And let’s not start on the price of train tickets – that return journey will have cost a pretty packet!

So, time, inconvenience and of course money. You have to be a real fan, and one with a few bob in the bank to put up with that. Still, the game was an entertaining spectacle was it not? Except for the Paul Scholes challenge which was pure thuggery. Whilst I know that he has a reputation as a midfielder who can’t tackle, this was far beyond any rash or mistimed effort. The cameras clearly show that Manchester City’s Kolarov had his eye on the ball whilst Scholes had his foot way off the ground and simply assaulted the Manchester City man. The way that his studs gouged deep into Kolarov’s leg was sickening.

The other semi produced something of an upset with Tony Pulis’s side thrashing the fancied Bolton a full five nil. And they played good football! What a turn up for the books, Stoke in good football shocker! Should make for an interesting final and the Manchester United fans may have to haul down the banner that they update and unfurl each year stating when Manchester City last won a trophy if they can be victorious at Wembley in the May final.
